ALOHA

ALOHA (A Low-cost Open-source Hardware system for bimanual teleoperation) is a puppeteering rig introduced by Zhao et al. at Stanford in 2023, pairing two small leader arms that a human moves with two follower arms that mirror them, enabling fine bimanual demonstration collection for roughly twenty thousand dollars. Combined with the ACT algorithm, it showed that tasks like slotting a battery or opening a ziploc bag could be learned from about fifty demonstrations; Mobile ALOHA and ALOHA 2 extended the design.

ALOHA collapsed the cost barrier for high-quality bimanual demonstration data, catalyzing the wave of teleoperation-plus-imitation systems whose datasets now feed vision-language-action model training.
