Collaborative Workspace

A collaborative workspace is the region within a robot cell where humans and robots may perform tasks simultaneously, as defined in ISO 10218 and detailed in ISO/TS 15066. Within it, one or more collaborative operating modes must apply: safety-rated monitored stop, hand guiding, speed and separation monitoring, or power and force limiting. Risk assessment determines the workspace boundaries, permitted speeds, and required sensing such as safety-rated laser scanners or vision.

Why it matters for physical AI

Defining and monitoring shared space is the regulatory mechanism that lets autonomous manipulators operate around people, and perception-based dynamic safety zones are increasingly how learned systems meet these requirements.
