Cycle Time

Cycle time is the elapsed duration for a robot or workcell to complete one full unit of its repetitive task, such as one pick-and-place or one assembly operation, directly determining throughput. Industrial automation is specified and purchased against cycle time targets, and optimization involves trajectory time-optimality, motion blending, gripper actuation overlap, and minimizing sensing dwell. It is typically reported alongside success rate.

Why it matters for physical AI

Learned policies must compete with hard-coded automation on throughput, not just flexibility, so inference latency and motion efficiency translate directly into the cycle times that decide commercial adoption.
