DexCap
DexCap is a portable hand motion capture system for collecting dexterous manipulation data directly from humans, introduced by Stanford researchers in 2024. It pairs electromagnetic finger-tracking gloves with chest-mounted cameras providing SLAM-based 6-DOF wrist tracking, recording precise hand poses alongside egocentric 3D observations in everyday environments. The paired DexIL framework retargets this data to train policies for multi-fingered robot hands without teleoperation.
Why it matters for physical AI
Teleoperating high-DOF hands is slow and unnatural, bottlenecking dexterous datasets. Wearable capture systems let humans generate manipulation data at natural speed in the wild, a promising route to scaling beyond lab teleoperation.
