Hybrid Grasp

A hybrid grasp is a grasp that combines characteristics of power and precision grasping, for example using the palm and proximal fingers to secure an object while leaving distal fingertips free to control or reorient it. Grasp taxonomies such as Cutkosky's and the GRASP taxonomy catalogue such intermediate postures, which humans use extensively when handling tools.

Tool use frequently demands both a secure hold and fine fingertip control at once, so multi-fingered hands and their policies must master hybrid postures to move beyond simple pick-and-place.
