Mu-Synthesis
Mu-synthesis is a robust control design methodology that synthesizes controllers guaranteeing stability and performance against structured model uncertainty, quantified by the structured singular value mu. Because directly optimizing mu is intractable, practical design uses D-K iteration, alternating between H-infinity controller synthesis and computation of scaling matrices. It extends H-infinity design by exploiting the known structure of uncertainty, yielding less conservative controllers.
Why it matters for physical AI
Certifiable robustness margins against quantified model error remain the gold standard for safety-critical actuation, offering the kind of formal guarantee that learned controllers are still unable to provide.
