Natural Language Instruction

A natural language instruction is a free-form text command, such as 'pick up the mug and place it on the shelf', used to specify a robot's task. Language-conditioned policies embed the instruction with a pretrained language or vision-language model and condition action generation on it. Systems like SayCan, RT-2, and OpenVLA established language as a standard task interface for generalist robot policies.

Why it matters for physical AI

Language provides a scalable, human-friendly way to command robots and to reuse internet-scale semantic knowledge, letting one policy cover many tasks without task-specific programming.
