OpenCV is the most widely used open-source computer vision library, originating at Intel in 1999, offering thousands of optimized functions across image processing, feature detection, camera calibration, stereo vision, tracking, and classical machine learning in C++ and Python. In robotics it commonly handles calibration, fiducial marker detection such as ArUco, and vision preprocessing.

Why it matters for physical AI

Even deep-learning-heavy robot stacks rely on classical vision plumbing, from camera calibration to fiducial tracking, and OpenCV remains the default implementation for that layer.
