Post-Grasp Manipulation
Post-grasp manipulation encompasses everything a robot does with an object after acquiring a grasp, including transport under dynamic constraints, in-hand reorientation, regrasping, tool use, and controlled placement or insertion. Because the initial grasp determines what downstream motions are feasible, grasp selection and post-grasp planning are coupled, a core insight formalized in task-oriented grasping and task and motion planning.
Why it matters for physical AI
Picking objects up is rarely the goal; using them is. Evaluating grasps by downstream task success rather than lift stability is what separates task-driven manipulation from pick-rate benchmarks.
