Shared Autonomy
Shared autonomy is a control paradigm in which a human operator and an autonomous system jointly control a robot, with the autonomy inferring operator intent and blending or arbitrating between human input and assistive commands. Formulations range from linear command blending to POMDP-based intent inference over candidate goals. It is applied in assistive manipulation, surgical robotics, and remote operation over degraded communication links.
Why it matters for physical AI
Full autonomy fails on edge cases and full teleoperation does not scale, so blending the two is the pragmatic deployment path — and the corrections it generates become training data.
