Swarm Robotics

Swarm robotics is the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots through decentralized, local interactions, drawing on collective behaviors of social insects such as stigmergy and flocking. Desired global behavior — aggregation, formation, collective transport, area coverage — emerges without central control, conferring scalability and fault tolerance. Harvard's Kilobot project, which demonstrated programmable self-assembly with 1,024 robots, is a landmark experiment.

Fleet-scale deployment raises swarm questions even for sophisticated robots: decentralized coordination, communication limits, and graceful degradation matter whenever many machines share a warehouse or field.
