TurtleBot

TurtleBot is a family of low-cost, open-source mobile robot platforms created in 2010 at Willow Garage as the reference hardware for learning ROS, now in its fourth generation. Successive versions built on iRobot Create and Kobuki bases, with the widely used TurtleBot3 from ROBOTIS offering a compact differential-drive robot with 2D LiDAR and full ROS 2 support for SLAM, navigation, and multi-robot experiments.

Why it matters for physical AI

An accessible standard platform trained a generation of roboticists on navigation and SLAM fundamentals, and shared reference hardware continues to make research reproducible in a field where results are notoriously embodiment-dependent.
