USD (Universal Scene Description)
USD (Universal Scene Description) is an open-source framework originally developed by Pixar for composing, editing, and interchanging hierarchical 3D scenes, built around layered, non-destructive composition of scene description. In robotics it is the native scene format of NVIDIA Isaac Sim and the Omniverse platform, where OpenUSD schemas describe robots, environments, physics properties, and sensors for photorealistic simulation and synthetic data generation.

Simulation-generated training data depends on rich, composable scene descriptions, and USD's layering makes it practical to procedurally vary environments at the scale that domain randomization and synthetic data pipelines demand.
