YuMi (ABB YuMi)

YuMi (ABB IRB 14000) is a dual-arm collaborative robot introduced by ABB in 2015, featuring two 7-DOF arms with approximately 500 g payload each, padded lightweight construction, and integrated grippers with optional vision, designed for small-parts assembly alongside human workers without safety fencing. It was among the first commercial dual-arm cobots and became a fixture in bimanual manipulation research.

Why it matters for physical AI

Inherently safe dual-arm hardware anticipated today's push toward humanoid-style bimanual manipulation, and platforms like YuMi supplied early evidence for what coordinated two-arm learned policies require in sensing and compliance.
