IP Rating (Ingress Protection)
An IP rating is a two-digit code defined by IEC 60529 classifying an enclosure's protection against solid particles (first digit, 0-6) and liquids (second digit, 0-9), so IP54 denotes dust-protected and splash-resistant while IP67 denotes dust-tight and immersion-resistant. Robots intended for outdoor, washdown, or dusty industrial environments specify IP ratings for joints, connectors, and electronics enclosures.
Why it matters for physical AI
Field deployment fails on mundane physics before algorithms: sealing against dust, rain, and washdown chemicals determines whether a robot survives farms, construction sites, and food plants.
