Transparency (Teleoperation)

Transparency in teleoperation is the fidelity with which a telerobotic system conveys the remote environment to the operator, ideally making the intervening machinery imperceptible so the operator feels as if manipulating the environment directly. Formally it requires the impedance perceived at the leader device to match the remote environment's impedance, a goal that trades off against stability in bilateral force-reflecting systems, especially under communication delay.

Higher transparency yields more dexterous teleoperation and therefore cleaner, more skillful demonstration data, directly improving the quality of datasets collected for imitation learning at scale.
