ANYmal

ANYmal is a series of quadruped robots developed at ETH Zurich and commercialized by its spin-off ANYbotics, built around series-elastic ANYdrive joint actuators and targeted at industrial inspection of sites like offshore platforms and chemical plants. It has been the primary hardware platform for influential legged-locomotion research, including Hwangbo et al.'s and Lee et al.'s Science Robotics papers on reinforcement-learned locomotion over rough terrain.

Why it matters for physical AI

ANYmal results established that simulation-trained neural controllers could outperform model-based locomotion in the field, providing the template of massively parallel training plus domain randomization now used across legged robotics.
