Modular Robot
A modular robot is a robot constructed from standardized, interchangeable units, whether self-contained joint modules that let integrators compose arms of varying reach and payload, or self-reconfigurable cellular robots that can rearrange their own topology. Module interfaces standardize mechanical mounting, power, and communication. Modularity trades some performance and rigidity for reconfigurability, easier maintenance, and economies of scale in module production.
Why it matters for physical AI
Cross-embodiment policies must generalize over kinematic variation, and modular hardware both generates that variation and offers a path to rapidly retargeting one trained stack across many robot configurations.
