Morphology

Morphology is a robot's physical form: its kinematic topology, link dimensions, actuator placement, degrees of freedom, and end-effector design. Morphology determines what behaviors are reachable and how difficult control is, a coupling studied as embodied intelligence and exploited by co-design methods that optimize body and controller jointly. In learning research, morphology is the axis of variation that cross-embodiment training seeks to generalize across.

Why it matters for physical AI

Foundation models trained on datasets like Open X-Embodiment must bridge wildly different bodies; how policies represent and adapt to morphology largely determines whether one model can drive many robots.
