Universal Robots UR5

The Universal Robots UR5 is a 6-DoF collaborative robot arm introduced in 2008 by Danish manufacturer Universal Robots, with a 5 kilogram payload and 850 millimeter reach, and among the first arms designed to work alongside people without safety cages by limiting force and power. Its successor UR5e continues the line. Simple programming, safety certification, and moderate cost made the UR family the best-selling collaborative arms and a ubiquitous fixture in manipulation research labs.

Why it matters for physical AI

The UR5's ubiquity made it a de facto standard embodiment in manipulation datasets and benchmarks, and its collaborative safety model prefigured the human-adjacent deployment context that learned manipulation policies now target.
